Born on the same day as Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin would become vary famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Like many scientists before him, he believed life on our planet developed gradually in the course of millions of years. He travelled the world by boat for 5 years and studied plants and animals. He published “The Origin of Species” in 1859, detailing the result of his many observations and research. His work had tremendous impact because it clashed with the religious beliefs of many people. At his death, he was honoured by a state funeral and was buried in Westminster Abbey beside Isaac Newton, another great scientist, buried there 150 years earlier.
